One Strap to rule them all! Camera strap preference is a personal choice but it is never trivial to take a strap on and off your camera. Usually you have to loop the strap through multiple tiny holes and fiddle with it to get it to the correct length. If you want to change it or take it off, to get it out of the way on a tripod, its the same process.
Peak Design has created a unique camera strap system that uses anchors that you attach to the camera instead of strap directly. The anchors then snap into the neck strap with an easy click.
I have the largest version of their camera strap system the aptly named SLIDE strap. It is made of a high quality nylon and metal components along with a touch of leather accent. The sliding mechanism makes it super easy to adjust the length of the strap. Therefore it can be configured in a multitude of options from traditional around the neck, sling, or shoulder carry. It also has a padded section with a rubberized grip that makes it comfortable when attached to heavier DSLRs.
Usage and Operation
The attachment anchor system starts with the anchors. They are now in their 4th iteration showing Peak Design’s commitment to making their products the best they can be. The process of attaching the anchors to the camera and clipping in the strap are detailed in the gallery below.
To unclip the anchor press down on it like a button and slide up at the same time, easy as pie! I use this strap for all my cameras as it makes it easier to store. The adjustment mechanism operates just as easily shown in the pictures below.
I have attached anchors to all my cameras that I use regularly. This allows me to quickly change cameras, depending on what I am doing that day. Here is the strap attached to my Leica M8, the width is not ideal for the smaller camera but works just as well.
If you are interested in a smaller option, the CLUTCH is a good option for medium size DSLRs and works well with Peak Design’s Capture Clip system that I will review in another post.
Conclusion
The Peak Design solution to the camera strap is novel and extremely convenient but it does come with a few downsides. The first is price, the SLIDE camera strap runs about $65 and the CLUTCH about $40. This includes the straps as well as the anchors necessary to use them. The other thing is the styling, while I like the look it is pretty basic and minimalist, if you are looking to use a more stylish strap they give you the ability to purchase the clip mechanism that runs about $20.
The other thing that I will point out is that all of Peak Design’s products are built to last, so that price is absolutely worth it!
