How to TinyWhoop It Up!

The TinyWhoop is a tiny quadcopter that can be flown via FPV (First Person Viewer) and it enables you to fly anywhere. The quadcopter is great for flying around the house and even small outdoor areas.

There are some limitations, the flight time is around two minutes and it cannot be flown in any amount of wind. The first one can be solved by getting a bunch of batteries, the second just means that you are limited to indoor areas and times where there is little wind outside.

They are good fun and safe to crash, the only liability being your girlfriend’s hair getting a bit tangled!1

My TinyWhoop Setup (My tea was on the other table oops!)

To fly FPV there are some things that you are going to need before getting started. First is a good pair of goggles from FatShark and and a Transmitter. I use a heavily modified version of the FatShark Teleporter v5 but I would invest in a higher end option that has an interchangeable module. The transmitter I am using is a FrSky Taranis Qx7. This is a good radio that can be used for all your quads and planes as well.

TinyWhoop Components

There are several pre-built TinyWhoops on the internet but it is cheaper to build your own. All the components can be purchased on amazon via the following links.

The build isn’t too involved, the only soldering that needs to be done is to connect the video system to the flight controller and OSD. Installing the software for the flight controller can be confusing but there are a bunch of tutorials on how to set up the configuration if you google around a bit. Nothing is ever all in one place, get used to searching the interwebs!

Flying

Here are a few clips of my flights around the campsite over the weekend to get a feel for what it looks like through the goggles!
